On May 21st, theMathorCup College Mathematical Modeling Challenge- National Finals of the Oral Defense of the Big Data Competition, organized by theChinese Society of Optimization, Overall Planning and Economic Mathematics, was successfully concluded. The team of Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance (SLU), consisting of Ren Zhangchuan (admitted in 2019 specializing in mathematics and applied mathematics), Hu Jiakai (admitted in 2019 specializing in mathematics and applied mathematics) and Fan Wenyun (admitted in 2019 specializing in applied statistics) from the School of Statistics and Mathematics, won the national first prize and the only gold medal in the final oral defense, making it a new breakthrough in the mathematical modeling competition.

2,654 teams took part in the competition, including 1,823 undergraduate teams, 757 graduate teams, and 75 junior college teams, from 576 universities. After the fierce competition of the first round in January, the second round in March and the final oral defense in May, three students from SLU finally won the first prize in the second round and the gold medal in the final oral defense (the first place) under the guidance of Mr. Liu Wenchen. Looking back on the whole season, the School of Statistics and Mathematics attached great importance to the competition and arranged professional teachers to lead students to preparation for the competition. Mr. Liu Wenchen provided instructions throughout the whole process, shared a lot of valuable experience, helped students work together, and ensured the excellence of model results and the optimization of algorithm results. In the second round and the final oral defense, Mr. Fang Maozhong and Mr. Wu Jia used carried out online discussion in the context of the pandemic, answered questions raised by the team and simulated the oral defense.

Going forward, the School of Statistics and Mathematics will continue to encourage more teachers and students to participate in various competitions, explore the educational and teaching functions and talent training efficiency of the competitions, and promote the specific application of the results of the competitions. It willstart with competitions, to “promote learning, teaching, reform and building through competitions”, in a bid to enhance student capacity of innovating, starting up businesses, applying knowledge and solving problems.
