Hosted by the CSAE and organized byShanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance (SLU) andthe Institute for the U.S. and Canadian Economics of Wuhan University, the CSAE Annual Conference 2021 and the Forum on China’s Economic Relations and Trade was held on the Wenxiang Road Campus of SLU on November 5th and 6th. The theme of the annual conference is “US Economic Trend and China-US Economic Relations and Trade in the Era of the Biden Administration”.

Vice Chair of SLU University Council, President of SLU and Vice Chairman ofCSAEYang Li extended his warm welcome to over 300 experts and scholars from 28 universities and research institutes across China who participated in the annual conference either remotely or in person, and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to them for their concern and support to SLU. Yang introduced the progress that SLU had made in academic disciplines and scientific research, and said that the COVID-19 pandemic posed a daunting challenge to China-US economic relations and trade and that the annual conference reflected the sense of mission and responsibility of CSAE as it focused on the new economic relations and trade between China and US as two major powers as well as the US economic trend and China’s economic development and trade.

Vice Chairman ofCSAE and Professor of Wuhan University Zhang Bin,Vice Chairman ofCSAE and Professor of Beijing Normal University Zhao Chunming extended their heartfelt thanks on behalf of CSAE to SLU for its elaborate preparations and considerate services for the annual conference, and expected to reach consensus through the annual conference to contribute insightful ideas and excellent academic outcomes to Chinese research in China-US economic and trade issues.Standing Committee Member of the SLU University Council and Vice President Chen Jie facilitated the opening ceremony of the annual conference.


Authoritative experts studying China-US economic and trade issues, such as Professor Yang Li, research fellow of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Zhang Youwen, Professor Hua Min of Fudan University, Professor Xu Kangning of Southeast University, Vice President of Zhejiang University Professor Huang Xianhai, Professor of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics Jiang Ling, Professor of Nankai University Li Kunwang, Professor of Fudan University Wu Xinbo, Professor of Wuhan University Zhang Jianqing, and Secretary General of CSAE and Professor of Wuhan University Yu Zhen, delivered keynote speeches over a range of topics, including the comparisons, impacts and inspiration of the Fed’s taper, China-US economic relations and trade and its implications for a new global landscape, and re-evaluation and outlook on current China-US economic relations and trade. Professor of Nankai University Sheng Bin delivered his keynote speech via a video link. President of Shanghai Lida University, Professors of Fudan University Huang Yajun and Yin Xiangshuo, and Professor of Beijing Normal University Zhao Chunming commented on these keynote speeches.

On the afternoon of November 6th, 54 academic papers were discussed at 6 parallel sub-fora: US Economic Trend and Policy Changes, International Trade and Policy Evolution, China’s Industrial Development and Regional Economic Integration, Transnational Investment and Digital Trade in Services, China-US Competition and Cooperation, and Global Currency and Fiscal Policy. The papers were also presented for discussion at the conference afterwards.


The sub-fora were facilitated by SLU’s specially-recruited professor Li Zhen and Professor of SLU’s Department of Research Chen Shuanghua. Professors Li Zhen and Wan Hualin as well as two other scholars delivered their academic reports at the sub-fora.


The fora also featured the CSAE leadership meeting and the meeting of authors of academic journals. Executive Associate Editor-in-Chief ofJournal of International TradeandInternational BusinessCui Xinsheng, Head ofIntertradeGuo Zhouming (research fellow), Editorial Director ofWord Economy StudiesZhang Wei, Associate Editorial Director ofJournal of Finance and EconomicsQiu Guojing, Editor of China and World Economy Chang Shuyu, and Editor ofInternational Economic ReviewCui Xiumei, had thorough interactions with other participants over the features of the journals, recent focus of contribution and review process, in a concerted efforts to brainstorm for academic journals. The meeting was chaired by Editorial Director of SLU’sAccounting and Economic ResearchChen Chunhua.

The annual conference provided an opportunity for experts and scholars in US studies as well as SLU faculty and students to share their ideas and have academic communication, in a bid to offer broader perspectives to studies in China-US economic relations and trade and propose valuable and forward-looking policy recommendations for China-US economic relations and trade.
